David Nelson Houghtaling

October 28, 1938 — December 17, 2023

David Nelson Houghtaling peacefully departed at the age of 85, following a brief illness in Everett, WA. Born on October 28, 1938, in Goshen, New York, David was the eldest child of Mildred and Charles Houghtaling. His legacy is one marked by a life dedicated to service, academia, and cherished family bonds.

After completing high school, David proudly served in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1958, stationed on an aircraft carrier near Bermuda. Subsequently, he pursued higher education at Miami University of Ohio, where fate intervened on a blind date, leading him to the love of his life, Ruth Dills. The couple celebrated 56 years of marriage.

In 1964, David and Ruth relocated to Everett, Washington, where David held a distinguished position at Everett Community College as a Professor of Philosophy until his retirement in 1997. His impact on students was profound, characterized by engaging lectures, thought-provoking discussions, and a sincere concern for their well-being. Colleagues and students alike held him in high regard, acknowledging his commitment to excellence in teaching.

Post-retirement, David and Ruth found joy in their Idaho cabin, indulging in various hobbies. From drawing and crafting, to gardening, fishing, writing poetry, and solving sudoku puzzles, David's diverse interests enriched his life. An avid enthusiast of baseball and boxing, he found pleasure in the simplicity of these pastimes.

David is preceded in death by his father in 2006, his mother in 2013, and his beloved wife, Ruth, in 2017. He leaves behind a loving legacy through his children Mary (David) Rowland, Scott (Gretchen) Houghtaling, and Kristi Houghtaling (David Pickens); four grandchildren, Ally, Jared, Amy, and Zach; and three great-grandchildren, Hazel, Willow, and Adeline.

He is also survived by his brother Charles (Bud) Houghtaling and sister Judy (Randy) Faurot. The family expresses gratitude to Sammy and Mary Biwott and the incredible staff at Amazing Samar Adult Family Home for their exceptional care.

David's memory will endure through the lives he touched, the wisdom he imparted, and the love that continues to resonate within his family and all those fortunate enough to have known him.
